Description
'Then Aulë took the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves, and laid them to rest in far-sundered places; and he returned to Valinor, and waited while the long years lengthened. [...]
They say also that the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves return to live again in their own kin and to bear once more their ancient names: of whom Durin was the most renowned in after ages, father of that kindred most friendly to the Elves, whose mansions were at Khazad-dûm.'
JRR Tolkien: The Silmarillion: Chapter 2: Of Aulë and Yavanna

A b/w work drawn for Warner Bros, originally intended to appear in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies 3D Extended Edition DVD & Blu-ray box-set, in a 'Making of ...' documentary to be released in Autumn-Winter 2015. This depicts Durin's long slumber in Mount Gundabad, essentially the northernmost peak of the Misty Mountains Range. It was from here that Durin finally awoke and, travelling south, happened upon the Mirrormere, whereupon Durin decided to found the great Dwarven realm of Khazad-dûm.
