The White Rider by peet The White Rider by peet
'The old man was too quick for him. He sprang to his feet and leaped to the top of a large rock. There he stood, grown suddenly tall, towering above them. His hood and his grey rags were flung away. His white garments shone. He lifted up his staff, and Gimli's axe leaped from his grasp and fell ringing on the ground. The sword of Aragorn, stiff in his motionless hand, blazed with a sudden fire. Legolas gave a great shout and shot an arrow high into the air: it vanished in a flash of flame.
'Mithrandir!' he cried. 'Mithrandir!''

Very nice, it really looks like what the old illustrative style was like.

Thanks a lot - this is what I try to keep in line with. It's simply how I enjoy my illustration, and what I feel Tolkien is most applicable to, too :)

Thank you - I'm always at pains to be as faithful to the text as possible, without betraying how I envisaged the scene too when I read it.

Me too - the PJ's Fellowship is not too bad, but I believe he seriously lost the plot soon after.

well we've else to think that mostly of detailed, great scene and conversations in the books were cut offfor the movies... 'cause off time OK... that's WHY I always prefer to watch a movie and then the book :P

Beautiful! I love all the trees and how they kind of impede the view - making it seem as if you are watching this yourself. Great job!

The atmosphere on this one look really different compared to the other painting I saw (I'm going through your gallery at this exact moment), may be it's due to the light, really realistic. Also, except for a few paintings of yours (including Legolas shooting at the Fell Beast for example), I always feel with your work like it could be a little better, or something could be improved. Here I'll change nothing :D

My favorite points : as always the trees and roots, Legolas's cape and Gimli (really 'Tolkienish' for me cause really thin).

Let's continue to watch this gallery ;) (and pardon my english, not my native language)

I like it! I know what you were trying to do with the forest but I almost feel that the large trunk in the foreground is a little too prominent, too large... but idk, I like it :D

Ah, this is absolutely stunning. For some reason I'm totally mesmerized by the trees, and particularly their texture. I also love the sort of multi-level landscape you've created; it adds great depth to the image.

although i like your style of coloring and the way you drew the characters, i don't think placing the tree in the foreground where it is was a good idea. it cuts the whole composition in two and draws the eye of the viewer away from the center of interest, represented by Aragorn and Gandalf, which is a big loss, considering the work you've put in it.

Kudos if just for depicting dear Lego in something other than blonde hair... (though I rather liked Orlando's accent when speaking Sindarin, the fangirls got on my nerves) and also, nice way of conceptualizing it! Fangorn looks so real, it's staggering.

I love this. The forest is perfect, you've made it a character in it's own right as well as the rest of the characters in the part. The trees are so tangled and contorted, and the lines in the clothing seem to mimic these shapes. Setting a tree trunk in front of the party really adds to the feel of the scene - they are truly embedded in this forest.

I'd fave you just for the fact that you did book -verse Legolas and not Movie-verse Legolas. But thats the least important thing here. Awesome work, well done.

I love the perspective. And the trees, too; they seem to huddle to watch the men. The colors are so interestingly arranged, it really emphasizes the "white" rider. ^_^
Awesome work.

I love the look on Gandalf's face. He looks so... unbeatable, and strong, in some way (sorry, I'm out of words after the other comment...
Also, Gimli has a very Dwarf-ish (word?)look. He looks scared, or surprised, but still you can see that he won't flee.
And I love the name Mithrandir ^^ It's just... Beautiful. Describes Gandalf in a weird way.
Sorry, I tried to make this comment less boring and long, but I failed...
Anywayz, this picture is probably the best LOTR-art I've seen around...

Your watercolors are really really nice! This one has an incredible composition and amazing vision too ;).

The influence of Alan Lee is great but you have your own style and it's important.

Greetings!

This is absolutely gorgeous. The style of it to me is quite evocative of Alan Lee's work, and yet doesn't have as much of a washed out appearance that I associate with Mr. Lee's works. It's such a gnarled, Fangorn looking forest :) and I think you did a great job with the "three travelers" as it really feels like them even though you see them primarily from behind.
