'Marrer of Middle-earth ...!' by peet 'Marrer of Middle-earth ...!' by peet
'But Húrin mourned openly, and he took up his harp and would make a song of lamentation; but he could not, and he broke his harp, and going out he lifted up his hand towards the North, crying: 'Marrer of Middle-earth, would that I might see thee face to face, and mar thee as my lord Fingolfin did!''

What a beautiful sky! I love Hurin's pose, too -- you can really see his anger, and his smallness relative to Morgoth, who is not even pictured but whose presence you still manage to convey.

Ah, this is great to read - thank you so much :boing:!

The idea that Morgoth is present and yet not so is particularly pleasing - 'Arda Marred; is the term, is it not? Morgoth's presence is always there, long after Hurin's and indeed his own downfall ...

I love the angle and lighting of this picture! They serve to heighten the drama of the moment and strengthen the pose.

Thank you so much, I always toyed with this scene in my imagination, so I had to think about how to bring that emotion through. Very glad you think I succeed :)

Oh, Húrin. *cries* That's a very poignant moment, and I think the evening light and the sculpture-like look of Húrin underlines it so well. (I love the way you painted Húrin. How did you do that.)

Thanks a lot! Always wanted to try this scene. This paper is very good at soaking up loads of water (it's the same stuff as Elwing Bearing the Silmaril), but still being quite vibrant. That's how I managed so many layers on Hurin. I used the same colours as the sky, both in various hues and wet-in-wet, but simply more layers ;)

The effect is fantastic. Not that I'm likely to be able to reproduce it even if I had the same materials, but would you be willing to tell me what brand of paper it is? :)

Thanks again! I wish I could but I don't know myself. I bought it years and years ago from a small art shop somewhere I don't remember, and the casing it's in has no indication of the brand! It looks artisanal is all I can tell! Sorry!

I think ... *THINK* ... it was located in a little backstreet in the outskirts of Paris, about 10 years ago ... :hmm:

Excellent scene here, in the less-is-more mode. Hurin's current emptiness and rage at the faceless ills of life is nicely conveyed.

Thanks a lot my friend, sometimes less really is more. The pieces balance between the two, however; they hint at detail whilst still being minimalist. One day I will get to that standard! Merry Christmas!
