A Flower in the Grey North by peet A Flower in the Grey North by peet

'Nine years Túrin dwelt in the halls of Menegroth. His heart and thought turned ever to his own kin, and at times he had tidings of them for his comfort. For Thingol sent messengers to Morwen as often as he might, and she sent back words for her son; thus Túrin heard that his sister Nienor grew in beauty, a flower in the grey North, and that Morwen's plight was eased.'

this is ludicrous, yet has a modern feel - like the girl in this drawing could be in a modern photo. Beautiful posing!

Thanks :) Yeah someone else said this to me - I'd imagine they looked pretty similar, except that Lalaith would be more jovial (with Nienor falling somewhere between her two siblings in terms of personality). I'll paint Lalaith too one day!

It is heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. I like the contrast between the grey landscape and Niniel golden hair and colorful dress.

Glad to elicit this response from you :) It is indeed the contrast that stood out for me in this citation - god I love the Children of Hurin!

Though she is not aware of her fate - it`s already over her... she is surrounded by it and there is no escape. Grey and heavy skies are falling onto her and there is no such light that can defit darkness of her fate. Children of Hurin - is a tough story...people are suffering not only because they are punished but just because the evil is too mighty, though they are fighting back they can`t win, people and other creatures just prolongue the agony...But the force of the spirit and the force of will make them go on...It`s an amazing picture - it gave so many emotions and thoughts, it made me return to this book and think of the story again. Thank you!

Humbled by this thoughtful comment, thanks so much! Yes this tale is tragic and dark, and grim and so on. Yet it's one of my favourites and really homes in on the Fate versus Free Will theme that finds its way into Tolkien's tales. This is obviously Tolkien the theologian shining forth, which I find particularly interesting and moving (though I'm not particularly religious anymore myself) :)

Yes, this is Tolkien`s particular story. And we find little works dedicated to it (especially to early life of characters). So I`ll wait for your inspiration))) Regards,

Ah whoops! Apologies - I didn't realise

Unfortunately I've not the time to devote to Children of Hurin at the moment - my energies are pushed onto other projects. I did have a 'work-in-progress' of 'Saeros Taunts Turin' on my FB page though, if you like :) I hope I'll be able to finish it one day:

This little golden flower is absolutely lovely. There's such a delicate beauty in how you drew her with the flowers... and I like how that ominous grey shadow in the North contrasts with her luminous blonde hair and looms so threateningly over her ('like' in the sense of the tragic tingles that this story always gives me).

Again, as ever, sincere thanks. The choice of flowers I think was dictated by the citation; A Flower could mean (and does mean) her, as well as the the one she clutches in her hand :)

Such beautiful composition and use of light! There is such heavy impact here, and the little Nienor truly represents the light in the darkness.
